On Wednesday, June 28, Col Shannon Johnson, Senior Defense Official and Defense Attaché with U.S. Embassy in Sofia, and Burgas Mayor Mr. Dimitar Nikolov will inaugurate the renovated Day Center for Youth with Disabilities.
The renovation of the Day Center is the result of close cooperation between the U.S. Embassy’s Office of Defense Cooperation and the Municipality of Burgas. The U.S. Government donated $250,000 USD to cover approximately 66% of renovation costs, and the Municipality provided the design and the additional funding to complete the renovations. The Day Center will provide speech therapy, physical therapy and rehabilitation, consultations, group activities and social service work. It can accommodate up to 20 children at a time as well as 12 specialized staff.
Over the last five years, the U.S. government has invested more than $4 million in Humanitarian Assistance Program projects in Bulgaria. The Humanitarian Assistance Program brings together American and Bulgarian military troops to collaborate on significant projects. Under this program, the U.S. government also partners with non-governmental organizations and local Bulgarian firms to carry out these projects in accordance with Bulgaria’s social and economic development strategy.
