Total 445 000 cetaceans individuals are counted in the shelf and deep water area of the Black Sea.

They are the three species of dolphins that are inhabits of its waters: porpoise - 65,000, bottlenose dolphin - 87,000, and ordinary dolphin - 293,000 individuals.

This is recorded in the final report sent to the European Commission, which formally announced the results of the completed project to study the adverse effects of fishing on cetaceans in the Black Sea.

The international project is involving scientists from England, Bulgaria, Romania, Turkey and Ukraine. Funding was from the Main Directorate of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries to EU Commission.
