In the excavations of the Rusokastro Fortress was discovered a rare golden coin by the Byzantine Emperor Phoka. It has a weight of 4.5 grams.
Phoka ruled from 602 to 610.
The first building of fortress walls on the rocky hill at Rusokastro is in the 6th century.
The opening of the coin shows that the fortress was actively functioning until the beginning of the 7th century. It was re-settled by the Bulgarian population in the 9th century.
The fortress is explored by a team of the Regional Museum of History in Bourgas.
The excavations are funded by the Municipality of Kameno, the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Bulgaria and the National Museum of History.
