Islands move from Romania to Bulgaria

The Danube islands keep moving from Romanian to Bulgarian waters without changing their territorial status.

According to the Convention for determining the river border between Bulgaria and Romania of 1908 the border is determined by the thalweg – the deepest part of the river.

Due to strong currents and high waters new sediments constantly accumulate and form new islands, while others disappear or even split in two.

For instance Komodino was one island years ago, but recently the current has separated it in two and the waterway goes right through the middle. Half of the island should be Bulgarian territory and the other Romanian, but for now it’s entirely Romanian.
